What Is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)? Formula & Calculation

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the gold-standard manufacturing benchmark measuring the percentage of planned production time that is truly productive.

The 3 Pillars of OEE and the Formula

The Comprehensive OEE Formula
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
  • Availability: Ratio of actual operating time to planned production time (penalized by breakdowns & setups).
  • Performance: Ratio of actual operating speed compared to the ideal engineering design cycle time (penalized by minor stops & slow cycles).
  • Quality: Ratio of good parts produced compared to total units produced (penalized by scrap & rework).

Concrete Factory Example:

  • Availability = 90.0% (0.90)
  • Performance = 95.0% (0.95)
  • Quality = 98.0% (0.98)
  • OEE = 0.90 × 0.95 × 0.98 = 83.79%

World-Class OEE vs. Average Performance

While an 85% OEE score is considered world-class for discrete manufacturing, unmonitored factories frequently operate at 45%–55% OEE due to unrecorded micro-stops and prolonged tool changeovers. Measuring OEE systematically directs maintenance teams to the root causes of capacity loss.
